‘The Twenty-One Nails and its commentary are contained in the Oral Transmission of Zhang Zhung, one of the main Dzogchen lineage of the Bon tradition.  Contained in this volume are teachings given on the commentary by the leading master of the Bon tradition Lopon Tenzin Namdak Rinpoche.

The Twenty One Nails belong to the fourth cycle, the tradition understands this teaching to have originated directly from a Buddha, and to have passed in mind-to-mind transmissions to another eight Buddhas.  From the ninth Buddha the teaching passed on to its first human lineage holder, and continued from him through twenty-four human masters, who transmitted it only orally.

The Twenty One Nails can be understood as the most direct possible expression of the state of a Buddha’s enlightenment, a Buddha’s own natural condition.  Each nail describes this state from a different point of view.’
