Description
Zhang Zhung Meri is one of the principal deities of Zhang Zhung, the place where the Bön teachings first arrived in Tibet, and is now considered to be in the area around Mount Kailash. Zhang Zhung Meri is associated with Mount. Kailash is closely tied to the transmission of the Zhang Zhung Nyan Gyud Dzogchen teachings, which include the profound texts of the Twenty-One Nails and Six Lamps, among others. Zhang Zhung Meri is the central deity in this thangka. Above is Tapihritsa, and below is Tapihritsa’s student, Gyerpung Nangzher Lopo. To the right and left of Zhang Zhung Meri are consorts Od Ley Sipé Gyalmo and Ne Ley Sipé Gyalmo. The protector, Nyipang Sé, is in the lower left corner, and the protector, Yeshé Walmo, is in the lower right corner.
